Bayelsa 2015: Jonathan’s wife mobilizes support for Dickson’s re-election

YENAGOA—FORMER first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has begun reconciling and  mobilising aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, groups in the state to drum up support for the re-election of incumbent governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson.

Mrs Jonathan, it was learned, yesterday met with aggrieved former political appointees and politicians in  the PDP seeking new strategies to ensure the re-election of Governor

Dickson for a second term in office.

 Dame Patience, who met with the former political appointees and other PDP members in Otuoke, the country home of the Jonathans,   said Governor Dickson remained the best candidate in terms of governance and development.

The meeting between Mrs Jonathan and the leadership of the PDP Integrity Forum was initiated by the group and attended by the leader and former Commissioner for Local Government, Deacon James Dugo, Director of Publicity, Blessing Kingdom, the Director of Finance, Timi Gbendu, the Director of Women Mobilisation, Mrs. Julie Okenarhe, and the Director of Organisation, Embiowe Tonworitimi.

Policeman shoots woman to death, injures husband in Lagos

LAGOS—A police corporal attached to Isheri-Oshun Division in Lagos, Wednesday night, fired a shot at a moving tricycle along Isheri/ Ijegun road, killing the wife of the operator, Idongesit Ekpo, on the spot.
Doctors at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, are however, battling to save the life of the operator, Godwin Ekpo, who was reportedly also hit by a bullet.
Consequently, visibly angry Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni, has ordered the immediate arrest of members of the team on duty that night.
The arrested team members include Sergeant Benson Ahambo, Corporal Augustine Telenundu, Corporal Onu Samuel and Corporal Musefun Aremu.

Mecca Crane Accident: Victims’ Families to Receive N70 Million Each as Compensation

Six Nigerian pilgrims have been confirmed dead while four have been declared missing in the crane accident which took place in a Mosque in Kaabah, Mecca, Saudi Arabia on Friday. The deceased, it was learnt on Sunday, had been buried in Saudi Arabia.

The spokesperson for National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Uba Mana, confirmed the death of the six Nigerians in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Sunday.

He said, “There are six Nigerians that lost their lives; in Islam, you don’t bring corpses back home. You bury them where they died. Preparations are on the way for their burial as I speak with you now. But I’m sure they will be buried here (Saudi Arabia).”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) also reported on Sunday that four female pilgrims from Gombe State had been declared  missing following the crash. One other female pilgrim got injured during the incident.

The State Amirul-Hajj, Alhaji Abdullahi Mai-Kano, disclosed this while sympathising with the state pilgrims in Mecca over the mishap on Sunday.

Mai-Kano said that the four pilgrims were from Akko, Dukku and Nafada local governments areas of the state.

Three Shot Dead During Owambe Party In Lagos

There has been tension in the Railway Line area of Oyingbo, Lagos, after hoodlums led by a gang leader, identified as John Ibafo, unleashed mayhem, shooting dead three persons, with several injured.

According to PUNCH, the deceased who had come from the Lagos Island area to attend a party in Oyingbo, were identified simply as Akeem, Sanni and Kola.

Trouble started on Saturday after some hoodlums from Otto, Jones Street, mobilised to Oyingbo and robbed some of the residents.

TROUBLE IN TRIBUNAL: Akpabio’s Witness Goes Blind

A drama played out at the Akwa Ibom National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal on Wednesday in Abuja when suddenly one of the witness of embattled former governor Godswill Akpabio, Mr. Stanley Annah from Ikot Ekpene dramatically turned blind when given the card reader report to state the total number of accredited voters for Ikot Ekpene.

Mr Annah, who told the tribunal that elections held in all the polling units of the council, suddenly turned blind and mute when told to read out the total number of accredited voters based on the card reader for Ikot Ekpene on exhibit P19. "I can’t see anything, I can’t read," he said.

President Buhari Reveals His Strong Stand

The Nigerian naira should not be devalued further, President Muhammadu Buhari said on Wednesday, despite the Central Bank of Nigeria’s growing struggles to keep the naira at current levels.

Despite CBN’s uphill struggle to keep the naira from falling, Buhari says naira must not be devalued.

“I don’t think it is healthy for us to have the naira devalued further. That’s why we are getting the central bank to make modifications in terms of making foreign exchange available to essential services, industries, spare parts, essential raw materials and so on – but things like toothpicks and rice, Nigeria can produce enough of those.”

Senate Pres. Saraki Faces Charges for Alleged False Declaration of Assets | Trial Begins on Friday

According to Punch, the Code of Conduct Bureau has filed a 13-count charge against Senate President, Bukola Saraki, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal for alleged false declaration of assets.

The trial will begin in Abuja on Friday.

Also, the report states:

Deputy Director in the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, M.S.Hassan, filed the charges against Saraki on September 11.

The charges against Saraki include false declaration of assets, alleged acquisition of assets beyond his legitimate earnings and keeping foreign accounts while holding public office first as Kwara State governor in 2003 and later as a senator.

Schools resumption: Osun students protest demand for parents’ tax clearance

Osogbo—Some public secondary schools’ students in Osun State, yesterday, protested against the demands for three years tax clearance from their parents by the Osun State Government.
By the new tax regime of the state government, an adult artisan is expected to pay a sum of N1, 500 per year as tax, while the arrears of three years of tax beginning from 2013 amount to N4,500.
Also, evidence of tax payment were demanded from students resuming in new schools in the state.
Specifically, about 250 students within Osogbo metropolis, protested against the demand for evidence of three years tax payment from their parents.

20m Nigerians infected with hepatitis virus — Expert

Bauchi—No fewer than 20 million people are infected with Hepatitis virus in Nigeria, Bauchi-based Gastroenterologist of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Dr Mustapha Umar, has said.

Dr Umar, who stated this in an interview in Bauchi yesterday, as part of activities lined up to mark this year’s Hepatitis Week, said 3.6 million people were currently infected with the virus in Bauchi State.

Northern leaders reject Jonathan’s confab report

Prominent Northern leaders, Tuesday, rejected the implementation of the 2014 report of the National Conference convoked by former President Goodluck Jonathan, saying that it did not address the key issues affecting them.

In its place, the northern leaders are asking President Muhammadu Buhari to convene a fresh
conference that would take into cognisance the challenges facing them and proffer solutions to them.
The northern leaders who are mostly former political office holders under the aegis of Northern Reawakening Forum (NRF) and headed by a former member of the House of Representatives, Mohammed Kumalia, said it would be wrong for Buhari to implement the report of the conference called by the former leader.
The group, which met in Abuja on Tuesday, issued a strong view on the last conference, and asked for the dumping of the report in the interest of Nigeria.

T.B Joshua Reportedly Purchases $60 Million Private Jet

According to Sahara Reporters, Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) pastor, T.B. Joshua, reportedly purchased a ‘nearly brand-new’ Gulfstream G550 aircraft in April 2015, a few months after the church’s building collapse that killed over 100 people.

The report further states:

Registered as “Synagogue Of Nations,” the jet was purchased using the Bank Of Utah trustee as the front for purchasing the jet.

Pastor TB Joshua’s jet has already started making the rounds. In June, it left the Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos on a whirlwind of South America, departing north from there to Kentucky in the United States.

The jet, which has US registration number N131LK, was built in 2010.  It was delivered to its first user in 2013 before making it to TB Joshua early this year.  SaharaReporters learned that the jet made a voyage to Nigeria in December 2013, as the Bank of Utah was apparently pitching it to Pastor TB Joshua.  The man of God reportedly asked to see it and bless it before finally taking delivery.

It could cost up to $3 million to maintain the jet annually, depending on how heavily it is used.

Nigeria Army Says No Election Took Place In Rivers

For the second time in about two days, the Nigerian Army has insisted that the 2015 governorship election did not hold in Rivers State, contrary to the claims of INEC chairman in the state.

The chief of army staff who sent three army officers to testify at the Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja maintained that election did not hold in virtually all polling centres assigned to them to provide security.

The army officers, who led different deployments on the orders of the Nigerian Army, said thugs carted away the election materials after the would-be voters had been scared away with gunshots.

Aisha Buhari Calls for Enforcement of Law on Rape to Protect Women & Children

The Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, has urged government at all levels to enforce the law on rape, to protect women and children in the country.

Aisha stated this when she received staff of the Ministry of Womens Affairs, UNICEF and National Population Commission, led by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Ezekiel Oyemomi.

The staff came to brief her on the plan to launch an action to end violence against children, slated for Sept. 15.
